Then, do you know where does it come from and its origin?

Everything had begun from a cartographer named John Spilsbury who wanted to create an educational tool to teach geography with pieces of wood on top of carved world map.

These piece of woods are made of planks of wood and cut using a saw (jigsaw), so nowadays this game is more popular to be called jigsaw puzzle or many just call it puzzle.

How does it go popular?

John saw this educational tool as great prospect for sale, so he made a few maps which are the World, Europe, Asia, Africa, America, England and Wales, Ireland and Scotland.

Can I see his first work?

Here it is, John's first jigsaw map, which is became the first puzzle ever sold in the world:

Furthermore, after John had passed away, the business was continued by his wife who was not only creating for jigsaw puzzle map but also paintings of landscapes patterns, which led to attract many people.

So why now jigsaw puzzles are made of cardboard?

It began from the late 19th of century, many manufacturers switched to cardboard jigsaw puzzles. When economic recession is occurred in the 20th century though, jigsaw puzzles (which began to be made of cardboard) became a game that doesn't spend a lot of money, entertaining and fun to play together.

Why the name is followed by the word "puzzle"?

The logical answer is that after it's cut and randomized, the ones who play it will be puzzled, so it's named after it.

How many types of jigsaw puzzles?

So in general jigsaw puzzle is a flat plane (2D game), but now it has been innovated into 3D jigsaw puzzle or spherical jigsaw puzzle.

So for beginners, it is advisable to try the flat plane (2D) first, then if you want to try more difficult puzzle, try the 3D one (spherical)

  • thousands of pieces (e.g. 3000 pieces)
  • tens of thousands of pieces (e.g. 32000 pieces, the largest one)

Wait a minute, jigsaw puzzles is now available with glow in the dark and stained-glass effect!

This is the example of glow in the dark effect, so the picture of the moon will glow when the lights are turned off.

While the stained-glass effect is using colored transparent plastic as the jigsaw puzzle mainboard instead of using cardboard. So if a light placed behind the puzzles, the jigsaw puzzles will be bright and the color will contrast. This is the picture:
